EMMA – Shunji Okura Photobook (1971)
Published in 1971 by The Mainichi Newspapers as Camera Mainichi Special Issue PRIVATE 2, EMMA is a photobook by Japanese photographer Shunji Okura.
The model is Emma Sugimoto, who was active in the early 1970s and appeared in magazines such as anan. Presented with an intimate, private-life atmosphere, the book captures her natural expressions and presence through portraits and nude photography.
The project was planned and structured by Shoji Yamagishi, with layout by Seiichi Horiuchi and cover and title-page artwork by Masuo Ikeda. It is also an interesting example of Japanese photography, fashion, and publishing design from the early 1970s.
